We encourage you to copy this letter and urge you to email it to your Representative and Senator. Again and again until it takes hold.

Dear Representative/Senator ___________________,

In the wake of the Orlando, Florida, massacre that left 50 mostly LGTBQ, Latinx young people dead, I urge you to support stronger, more comprehensive legislation that requires:

  • universal background checks for all gun purchases, in person and online;
  • a ban on magazines with more than 10 rounds of ammunition;
  • and other common-sense gun control measures to prevent these tragedies from continuing to occur.

Background checks work, are supported by over 90% of all Americans, and are a common-sense tool for keeping guns out of irresponsible hands, including those convicted of violent felonies, domestic abuse, and hate crimes. It is unacceptable that the next generation of doctors, lawyers, nurses, artists, neighbors, taxpayers, mothers, brothers, lovers, and visionaries continue to be gunned down at school, in their homes, and spaces of worship—whether that’s in dance or prayer. Background checks on all gun sales are the most effective way to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people and let our young people get to work building the future.

I am begging you to vote to close the deadly loopholes in our laws that make it too easy for destructive people to get guns and use them at will. What happened in Orlando is not the first time, and if you do not act now, it will not be the last. We are devastated by the ongoing loss that fills our social media feeds, call logs, and front pages. We cannot stand for the ongoing attacks on all LGTBQ communities and innocent citizens.

This violence is our history. This violence shatters us as a nation, and it will take your effort to keep our families alive. Our lives lie literally in your hands. Please use your vote, not our guns, to protect us.

Thank you for standing with us.

Respectfully,
